Wisbech wanderings

This morning we had an Interesting guided tour of Peckover house in Wisbech, built in 1722 and bought by the Peckovers in 1794. They were a wealthy Quaker family of bankers with lots of influence in Wisbech.

We heard stories of candlelit dinners as late as the late 1940’s as the Quakers wished to avoid wasting money on putting unnecessary electricity  into the house; necessary electricity was, however, welcomed in the kitchen so the servants could see what they were cooking! We also heard about the spinster quaker daughter who, on inheriting the property, threw away all the beer and wine from the cellar (worth £1300 at the time!)
