… and a fort.
… and a fort.

… and a fort.

After a lovely picnic in the wood by the car we set off for Naarden and the Vesting museum. A bit of an unknown destination which turned out to be another enormously interesting visit where we learned about the Dutch water line and a bit of Dutch history including Napoleon’s brother who was king for a while and the fact that the country was once together with Belgium and was a part of France! We saw listening tunnels and a star shaped defence system which was ingenious.

Listening tunnel – a long tunnel which passes under the fortifications – guards would patrol these tunnels at night, listening for activity above.
The holes in the listening tunnel were called “ears”, sounds would be transmitted down from the surface into the tunnel.
