Haarlem

Woke up to a light dusting of snow! Parked up in the same parking as last night in Haarlem with no difficulties and arrived early for our tour of the Corrie Ten Boom museum. So we went via the city archives located in a very interesting building.

Then at 10 o’clock sharp we had a stunning tour by an amazing guide who showed photos and told real stories of Corrie’s life and work to help jews and other at risk people  hide and escape to safety during the second world war leading to her arrest and  time in concentration camp with her sister and father, the clockmaker. Followed by her travels to share her story with the world where mum and dad met her in Kenya in 1965 when mum was pregnant with me! We also met the man who bought the house to follow Corrie’s vision.

Entry into the hiding place in linen cupboard of Corrie’s bedroom. 6 people had to stay 2 nights with no water before being rescued after two friendly police were notified to take the guard. Corrie, her sister Betsy and her father were arrested.

Then on to the Teyler’s museum for our 11.45 entrance where we enjoyed looking round the varied exhibitions of science, fossils, coins, artwork  and the recently opened house where he lived.

At 1.45pm we joined a boat trip with only two others along The canals from the Mill de Adriaan past the weigh house ” de Waag” , houseboats costing over 700k to Hemestede with beautiful mansions on the Spaarne river to the mill de Eenhoorn. This is one of only 4 remaining working saw mills in the world! And the lady was happy for us to have our picnic on the boat which was alot nicer than at 3 degrees outside! Our skipper was very knowledgeable and delightful though kept leaving the boat to drive itself!
