So from Sutton we spent a lovely last day in Whittlseford. Starting with a service in Sawston Christchurch South Cambridge and picnic with Flora and Victoria in Falmere bird reserve.
We then enjoyed another bbq with our lovely hosts and got ready to leave early the next morning. And off we went…
We drove to Bury St Edmunds to a lovely camping and caravaning site called Pinewood.( £10) We then went straight to visit Ickworth House which had spectacular Italian influence in its design and interior.
We cut short our walk round the grounds due to rain but the grounds were large but not particularly spectacular. We then visited Bury St Edmunds and the cathedral that David used to sing in with his school choir. The last remaining working regency theatre in the country was not open for visit but we had a good chat with the receptionist!
We then visited the abbey remains and cathedral. The choir stalls had been modernised since David’s time and there was a great lego version!
Next morning we left quite early to go to colchester via Lavenham a particularly beautiful medieval town with a Guildhall which used to be the workhouse and prison.
So on to our campsite at Hill Farm, White Cohlne which was run by a lovely couple in their 80s and was really only a field in their farm.
We arrived at 1 ish and after settling in went to another NT property called Paycockes house. We arrived as a tour was about to start and were treated to a wonderful tour of a very interesting tudor house. I learnt the term pargeting which was the way they put a design on the plasterwork moulded with bottles. And lots of history about Henry 8 and Catherine of Aragon who were the king and Queen as the house was built so got into the border on the front along with the fool, the dragon and a sheep, the letters TP for Thomas Paycocke and his ermine tail design! All in the photos! And this link: https://www.britainexpress.com/counties/essex/properties/paycockes.htm
